Lords of Metal
Kiuas is a new band from Finland, founded in 2000, which have released two demo-CDs already. The last one of those two, entitled Born Under The Northern Lights has led to a record deal with the Rage Of Achilles record label. First release on that label is this Winter In June mini-album, on which we can find all three tracks from the aforementioned demo-CD completed with the new title track.
The roots of this band are clearly to be found in the traditional heavy metal style with some more modern elements. An example of this are the keyboards which are a bit more prominent in the mix, in a way that Children Of Bodom is doing. Furthermore the vocals of Ilja Jalkanen are energetic and he proves that he has a very powerful voice. And, last but not least, the guitar parts of Mikko Salovaara are excellent with a lot of adventurous and playful riffs.
The older songs betray the fact that they used to play a more progressive style of metal in the early days and the new track Winter In June shows that these influences are reducing. Im quite curious if this trend will continue on the new full-length album, which they will record in the very near future. I must honestly admit that the older song Warrior Soul is the best to my liking, mainly due to the great chorus line. In conclusion I can say that Kiuas with this mini-album gives a good representation of what theyre capable of and they prove that they can become one of the better bands from the crowded Finish metal scene.
